Level 2 Field Experience Journal Day 1 (Monday, 10.31.11) - 2 Hours
The first day of observing class with Ms. Hinz I got there half way through her 2nd period class because of our building orientation. I stayed and observed her 3rd period class in addition to participating in Scarlet Reading time. I also observed 4th period PE with Mr. Esch and saw how he ran his class as well. Ms. Hinz introduced me to her class in the 3rd hour class and gave me the opportunity to tell them a little about myself and allowed them to ask me questions as well. The first day that I was there I did mostly observation and got to know some of the students. I was not real clear on the rules of team handball so I also learned quite a bit about the game on that day too. Day 2 (Tuesday, 11.1.11) - 2 Hours
On Tuesday I observed for periods 2 and 3 with Ms. Hinz. She started by going over the rules of the game and then she had the students go through a few drills that would help them be able to play the game better. She then had the students get into their teams that were posted on the wall and start playing the game using the skills that they had worked on in the drills. I did mostly observation on this day and helped out where I could. Day 3 (Wednesday, 11.2.11) - 3 Hours
On Wednesday of my first week there Ms. Hinz was not there so there was a sub for the day. In talking with the sub he said that he had already spend a lot of time with the students because he had subbed a lot earlier in the year. I was there for the first three periods of the day and for each period he went over the rules of the games before getting into teams and playing the game. The majority of the time was spent playing the games with a two minute half time if the students wanted to take it. One thing that I thought could have been done to make things more interesting is to switch up the competition from time to time so the students were playing other teams. Most of the students contributed to the team and I did not really see any students standing off to the side and not participating. Day 4 (Friday, 11.4.11) - 3 Hours
On Friday Ms. Hinz had to hold her classes in the fitness center because there was a blood drive in the gym. The students were given the option of doing 1 of 3 things in the fitness center. Their first option was doing the cardio machines. With this option she discussed the different machines and reminded the students how to do them correctly. The second option was lifting weights. With this option she discussed with the students that they need to lift weights with a partner and only use the machines that they have been trained to use. The third option was playing 3 step boomerang tag and she again discussed how to play that safely and went over the rules. Most of the students chose the game vs. lifting or doing cardio. On this day most of the teaching had to do with giving reminders on safety before the class went from the gym to the fitness center. I mostly observed on this day but I also tried to keep the students moving and tried to keep the game moving. I also observed the students who chose to lift or do cardio and there were no problems there that I could see. Day 5 (Wednesday, 11.9.11) - 3 Hours
On Wednesday I spent 3 class periods with the 9th grade PE with Ms. Hinz. This was the day that the students were to take their unit quiz for Hand Ball. As usual the first hour started with the reading of the announcements followed by instructions for the class period. The students were instructed to sit in lines on the floor when they were taking their tests. Once Ms. Hinz was done with announcements and discussing the plan for the day I assisted her in administering the test. Once the student was finished taking the test they were given the opportunity to go out into the lobby and check out the health fair that the sophomores were putting on. Once everyone had 7 minutes out there the class came back into the gym for another day of handball for the rest of the period. The same agenda was used for all three class periods. A few of the things that I like were that Ms. Hinz encouraged the students to look at how the Health Fair projects were done because the 9th grade students would be doing the same thing the following year. In the final hour that I was there I had the opportunity to referee a game which I enjoyed doing. The students will have their final day of Handball on Thursday and start CPR on Monday. I also discussed with Ms. Hinz our plan for my co-teaching for the next couple weeks. Day 6 (Thursday, 11.10.11) – 3 hours
On Thursday I spent 3 hours with Ms. Hinz and her 9th grade P.E. class. Period one started with the daily announces followed up by going over the unit tests from the previous day. As I assisted in giving the tests back to the students so that they could discuss any answers they had incorrect Ms. Hinz asked the students that had been absent the previous day to step outside for a few minutes so they could not hear the answers. The students were then given the opportunity to ask any question they want about questions on the quiz and why they got the answer incorrect. I then collected all of the tests so that they could be entered into the grades. Ms. Hinz then discussed with the students what the schedule was going to be for next week since they will be switching units and in most cases going back to the original PE teacher that they had earlier in the year. She explained to the students that she was going to have next unit that they will be studying CPR and where they will be meeting for that unit. She also informed the students that were going to be in Mr. Esch’s and Ms. Palmer’s classes what they will be doing for their next units. After that that the class broke into teams again and played hand ball for the last day. This was the exact same procedure for each of the classes I went to on Thursday. Day 7 (Monday, 11.14.11) – 3 hours
Monday was an introduction day to CPR. Ms. Hinz started off each class by instructing the students what they need to do as they entered the classroom each day for the duration of the unit. The students were told that they only thing that they would need each day was their CPR packets, face shields, and if they wanted to they had the option to use gloves. She also told the students where to leave their backpacks while they were in class because the CPR room at West in a mot a room that is generally used during regular physical education classes. In addition to going over the basics of how the class in going to operate Ms. Hinz also informed the student how they will be graded and what they are going to be responsible for in order to pass the class. She informed them of the required parts of the unit that they will be responsible for and also the things that are not required. There are 13 skills that will be taught and the students will be required to pass Adult CPR, Child CPR, Infact CPR, and AED. She showed them how many skills need to be tested out on to get certain grades. For example, if the student completes the entire packet of skills they will get an A and so on. With the amount of time left for each class period Ms. Hinz started teaching three of the skills that included conscious choking adult, conscious choking child, and conscious choking infant. There was not enough time for the students to practice these skills on the first day. My day consisted mostly of observing. Before I left Ms. Hinz and I discussed how we were going to co-teach on Wednesday and Thursday. Day 8 (Tuesday, 15.10.11) – 3 hours
Tuesday was a review day / practice day for the students. Ms. Hinz was not there on this day so there was a substitute teacher there instead. She did a very nice job of reviewing what Ms. Hinz went over on the previous day. She re-taught conscious choking adult, conscious choking child, and conscious choking infant. Once she was done teaching the information again the students had the opportunities to practice the three skills and then had the opportunity to test out on these three skills. There were two teachers there to test the students on the skills and I was there to help the students practice for the tests. I feel confident in my ability to help the students get ready for their tests. All but three of the students had passed all three of the skills at the end of the first three periods and that was only because we ran out of time in the third period. Day 9 (Wednesday, 16.10.11) – 3 hours
Wednesday was the first day that I co-taught with Ms. Hinz. I had originally planned on co-teaching during the handball unit but I was not able to because I ill from class that day. We decided to co-teach the first two periods because another MSU student was planning on teaching a portion of the class in period 3. Ms. Hinz and I decided it would be best if we flipped who was going to be the lead teacher vs. the teacher that assists. The three skills that were being taught were unconscious choking adult, unconscious choking child, and a unconscious choking infant. The first skill was unconscious choking adult. For this skill Ms. Hinz was the lead teacher and I assisted. The second skill was unconscious choking child. For this skill I was the lead teacher and Ms. Hinz assisted. For the third skill we flipped again for the unconscious choking infant, again Ms. Hinz was the lead teacher and I assisted. In the first period I felt pretty comfortable in two of the three skills. I was not as comfortable in the skill of unconscious choking infant so I do not think I did a very good job with co-teaching that part. I think because I was not as comfortable with this skill I did not add much to the teaching. I also did not contribute as much because Ms. Hinz was doing such a good job teaching it and I did not want to give out bad information. I struggled in the 2nd period with the teaching because I somewhat lost where I was and got rattled. Ms. Hinz asked the students what I should do next and used it as a learning opportunity for them, which worked well, even though I was not totally comfortable with it. Day 10 (Thursday, 11.17.11) – 2 hours
Thursday was the second co-teaching day for me. It was a pretty short co-teaching opportunity because we were reviewing what we went over the previous day. I was at West for the first two periods of the day. The first period was an observation for me for the first part of the period and then I assisted the students in studying for their unconscious choking adult, child, and infant test. Ms. Hinz and one other teacher were there to do the testing for the day. The two of them did the co-teaching period one so that I knew exactly what my role was going to be in period two. The co-teaching consisted of one teacher playing the role of the 9th grade student taking the test and the other co-teacher played the role of the teaching that was giving the test. I took some notes during the first period so that I felt more comfortable with what I was doing and then helped the students getting ready for their test. I felt that I did a pretty good job with my co-teaching part in period two playing the role of the student. Ms. Hinz did let me know that I did make one error with the tongue lift and let me know why doing everything exactly perfect is so important in setting an example for the students. I spent the rest of the period helping the students in the second period getting ready for their tests. I encouraged the students that the most important thing to remember was to just stay calm and think logically about their steps and they will be fine with enough practice before hand. Day 11 (Monday, 11.21.11) – 3 hours
Monday was my last day at West and it was also the third and final time that I taught. This is the day that I chose to videotape myself teaching. Again I co-taught with Ms. Hinz and we focused on Found Unconscious Choking Adult, Child, and Infant. I was the lead teacher for adult and child while Ms. Hinz assisted. For the Found Unconscious Choking Infant Ms. Hinz was the lead teacher and I assisted. I was not as comfortable teaching this unit as I have been teaching other skills unit because I have never taught CPR before. The students were given the opportunity to test on any of the skills after the teaching lesson and they were also informed that they would have the entire class period on Tuesday to test if they were not ready yet. Many of the students continued to test on what we have went over in the first week and very few tested on what they learned today. I asked the students if they would take a few minutes and fill the survey for me and they turned that back into me before they left. It was the first time that I had actually co-taught three periods in row and I became more comfortable by the third period. Ms. Duffy was also there to answer and questions that the students had and she was also able to test the students on their skills. When the teaching was done I spent the rest of the class period going around to each group and answering any questions that they might have when they were studying for their tests.
